Imagine you live in Detroit, and you want to vote for a Republican. In order to do so, you have to show your ballot to any number of Democratic officials who will visit your home or accost you on the streets. Now, to be fair, you can refuse to show them your ballot, but they’ll know what that means (after all, why would you refuse to show them a “good” ballot? Obviously, you’re only hiding a “bad” ballot.)
And what are they going to do to you as a result of your defiance? Are they going to take your job? Your government benefits? Are they going to assault you? Damage your property? Kill you?
I mean we’re talking Detroit - government-approved crime/riots are a common event and a ubiquitous threat. (Wonder why they want soft on crime prosecutors? Because they want voters to be afraid, very afraid. Vote the wrong way, and who knows what happens?)
And remember we’re talking about voters who didn’t bother to register (hence the need for motor voter bills), who didn’t bother to request ballots & who won’t bother to return them (which is why we “need” VBM and ballot boxes etc). How hard is it to intimidate or bribe people who don’t care about voting anyway? Answer: not hard at all.
VBM isn’t voting anymore than watching Court TV is jury duty. Eliminating the formalities isn’t rational or prudent; it’s simply legalizing fraud - transforming voter intimidation into voter drives, disguising the corruption as virtue.
VBM should be illegal (granted, soldiers may need VBM, but soldiers can defend themselves). Suggesting that vulnerable people should be “voting” via means that make them even more vulnerable is outrageous.
Time to restore the secret ballot.
